The “Do The Right Thing” pitch competition, organized by our EDCKC team, the KC BizCare Office, and Startland News, awarded $50,000 to five local small businesses doing good in the Kansas City community.

The award recipients were selected by a panel of judges:

  • Utopia Point, whose work focuses on enhancing care for the elderly and disabled community, won big with $28,000 in funding.
  • CoBuild, a construction company building affordable housing and workforce training, received $11,000 in funding.
  • Storyboards College Admission Portfolio, which offers a holistic approach to the college application process, won the $5,000 KC Small Business Advisory Committee’s Choice Award.
  • EB Systems and Ophelia’s Blue Vine won $2,000 and $4,000, respectively.

During the event, the team premiered a video catching up with recipients of the Micro-Business Grant Program support to hear how much it has meant to them and their businesses.

The Do the Right Thing pitch competition and Micro-Business Grant Program are part of the KC Small Business Capital Programs, whose goal is to provide affordable and accessible starting capital to Kansas City’s small businesses. For more information, click here.
