Mark Your Calendar for Global Entrepreneurship Week 2013

In Events, KC News by EDCKC Staff

You’re invited to help Kansas City celebrate its entrepreneurs Nov. 13th-24th!

Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW), now in its sixth year, celebrates the innovators and job creators who launch startups around the world. During one week each November, more than 130 nations host events to recognize the entrepreneurs and their startups that bring ideas to life, drive economic growth, and expand human welfare. GEW was created by the Kauffman Foundation and receives its continued support.

Kansas City has been an epicenter of GEW activity since the beginning. Last November, nearly 60 local organizations hosted more than 40 events – and an estimated 4,000 Kansas Citians participated.

GEW 2013 in Kansas City is shaping up to be bigger and better than ever! You’re encouraged to join in the celebration locally Nov. 13-24 (one week wasn’t enough for KC!). More than 40+ events brimming with opportunities for education, networking, and collaboration are on the docket and will take place throughout Kansas City.

This year’s local events include Demo Day, eKC Explained, Reverse Pitch, Investor Portfolio Showcase, and much more.

SHOP ALL DAY LONG!  Metro-Wide KC Area

*This is the Global Entrepreneurship Week Finale

Main Street merchants are the backbone of our downtown areas and the foundation of our communities. Did you know what happens when you shop local?

> More money is kept in the community because locally owned businesses tend to purchase more often from other local businesses. It also contributes to our tax base—and to city services. A study in Austin, Texas, found that $100 spent at a local bookstore produced $45 worth of local economic activity compared to just $13 at a national retailer.

> Nonprofits receive greater support: local business owners tend to donate more to local charities than non-local owners.

> Unique businesses create character and prosperity.

> Environmental impact is reduced. Before it reaches a store, most food in the U.S. is picked up a week in advance. Your carrot travelled 1,838 miles to become part of your meal. And because local businesses usually set up shop in town centers rather than on the fringe, they contribute less to sprawl, congestion, habitat loss and pollution.

> Most new jobs are supplied by local business. Check out the converse: National chain often bring loss of employment. The opening of a major big box retailer reduced retail employment by an average of 150 jobs in the county of its location.

That’s why we invite you to join the growing Shop Local movement. From 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 23, enjoy your hometown restaurants, shop in your Main Street marketplace and support Kansas City area small business and entrepreneurship.
