In the heart of Kansas City, Paul’s Drive In has been a cherished staple since the 1960s. Through ups and downs—including a major fire in 1997—the restaurant persevered, preserving its historic charm while welcoming modern updates. Patrons can still see the original order window from the 1960s, now paired with contemporary additions that honor its past. Over the decades, the drive-in has delighted generations with its friendly service and classic menu.

A Legacy of Quality

Paul’s Drive In stands out for its commitment to premium ingredients and fresh preparation, setting it apart from chain competitors. Their smash burgers feature 90% lean, fresh, never-frozen beef for a perfect sear, while their Bacon Cheeseburger boasts thick, freshly cooked bacon bursting with flavor. Even their ice cream machine, always reliable, is a point of pride. This unwavering focus on quality has kept them a beloved local choice, even amid tough competition.

Community Focus

Beyond great food, Paul’s Drive In is deeply engaged with its neighbors. The heart of Kansas City’s community is central to their success and mission. In partnership with local groups—including adult education centers, nonprofits, and schools—they have sponsored toy drives and are planning food drives to unite the community. They also collaborate with Hickman Mills Schools to display student artwork in the restaurant, giving young artists a creative outlet and fostering a sense of ownership.

Paul’s Drive In’s dedication earned them the title of Kansas City’s Favorite Best Burger, Best Frozen Treat, and one of the best lunch spots in Kansas City in 2023, sponsored by the Kansas City Star. They celebrated with an event showcasing student art, unveiling the winners that decorate the lobby to this day. The staff all live locally, reinforcing the restaurant’s commitment to sustaining the people who form its core customer base. They won Best Burger for a second year in a row in 2024, along with maintaining wins in the Frozen Treat and Lunch Spot categories.

Building Partnerships

The owner highlights ongoing collaborations with organizations like the KC Human Shelter, noting, “We partner with many schools and nonprofits and welcome more collaboration.” This sense of community is palpable, whether it’s a nurse unwinding after a long shift or a neighbor seeking a friendly face. Paul’s Drive In is an integral part of daily life here, offering a welcoming space for everyone.

Bright Future

Major renovations are planned to preserve its retro atmosphere while enhancing the overall customer experience. Plans include adding a picnic area where guests can savor their rich, creamy signature ice cream outdoors. They are also the only place in Kansas City serving Ice Cream Nachos—waffle cone chips with a choice of ice cream, hot fudge, or butterscotch and candy toppings—plus chili cheese dogs, Frito pie, and retro arcade games for a fun twist to dining.

Guiding Principles

Beneath the surface, Paul’s Drive In operates with the philosophy of “doing good first.” Decisions aren’t driven by profit alone but by how they serve employees and the community. This approach fosters loyalty among staff and patrons alike, creating an environment where everyone feels cared for and welcomed.

In fact, the staff’s dedication to making each guest feel special is a cornerstone of the drive-in’s success. “It’s not just about serving food—it’s about connecting with people,” says the owner, reflecting on how the team goes above and beyond to create lasting memories for everyone who walks through the door.

Investing in KC

As an anchor store, Paul’s Drive In strives to uplift the region through local business partnerships, lunch specials, and discounts for educators and support staff. Their dedication extends to offering a 10% discount on two meals on Mondays and Tuesdays for teachers and school support staff. “Without the community, we wouldn’t be here,” says the owner—a belief that shapes every part of their operations.

Paul’s Drive In is also a true reflection of Kansas City’s entrepreneurial spirit. Known as the “Silicon Prairie,” Kansas City offers big-city amenities with a small-town feel. 1. In the early 70’s when it was still ” Pauls’ Pizza ” , my grandma would crave a peperoni pizza and a chocolate shake . She would give me a few dollars and her car keys . I always loved her enthusiasm when i came in the door wit her hot pizza . She loved Paul’s . I graduated from Ruskin in 73 , so I spent alot of time parked in Paul’s after school !! Also saw the train slow many times , men would jump off and run to get the dinner . Then the train would slowly pick up speed as they came running back out .

  2. Very informative story but you left one important detail out. Where the hell is the place located?? I think your story should give an address and not require your readers to look on social media (which I don’t do) to know where it is. Journalists (sic) today don’t seem to know about the who, what, WHERE, when, why and how of writing.
