The second annual Big Data Summit KC will be held from Wednesday, Nov. 12, to Friday, Nov. 14, at the Kansas City Convention Center. The summit is a technology talent development initiative for Kansas City companies focusing on the training and development of data experts and scientists.

“This event is important to the Kansas City business community because it helps grow and develop a specific skill set that is important to the local technology market,” said Drew Solomon, event co-founder and entrepreneurship coordinator at the Economic Development Corporation of Kansas City, Mo. “The technology industry is blossoming here and will continue to grow, so we need to be prepared for an increased demand for technical workers. The Big Data Summit provides numerous professional development opportunities for data science professionals.”

The event is expected to draw an attendance of about 400. Along with keynote speakers, the summit includes interactive panel discussions, a job fair and a hackathon. The event was co-founded in 2013 by Don Peterson, organizer of the Kansas City Big Data Group, Betty Ann SantaMaria, senior IT recruiter, Applied Analytics Group at DST Systems, and Solomon.

A keynote address will be delivered by John Young, PhD, Vice President of Development & Data Science, Applied Analytics Group at DST.. Young’s keynote, “Data Science, The New Frontier,” is an in-depth review of data science and an exploration of the myriad ways it may be used to improve everyday lives.

Top data scientists from IBM, Intel, Cisco, Teracrunch and more will be on hand to share insights into the quickly evolving industry. Mykola Hayvanovych, PhD, global director of data science, Worldwide Professional Services, Intel Corporation, is participating in a panel discussion on the importance of data science. “Today’s technologies allow us to continuously generate vast streams of data about everything from customer transactions to genome sequences,” said Hayvanovych. “These data collections hold tremendous potential to solve problems, create economic growth and improve our quality of life.”

“Big data is mission-critical to the future success of companies whether a start-up or a corporation. Companies need to be storing, mining, analyzing and making business decisions based on data in order to compete in the long-term,” said Peterson. “The Big Data Summit KC allows companies of all sizes to learn the latest developments from the biggest names in the industry.”
